RUTA 2: Sant Pere de Rodes - Port de la Selva - Cadaqués

View of Cadaqués
A visit to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is a very interesting excursion. It currently belongs to the municipal region of Port de la Selva and can be reached from Sant Pere Pescador by travelling towards Castelló d'Empúries and then towards Vilajuiga.

Visitors can make two stops on the way to the monastery: the first at Aguas de Vilajuiga and detouring slightly till reaching the Castle of Carmançó. This construction is completely in ruins, but its history is very interesting given the "legend" of the affair of the Countess of Molins (captain of a band of robbers), who was very much linked to Sant Pere Pescador, and the giant of Ventalló. If you visit the location, remind us to tell you their fabulous story.

The monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, at the Port de la Selva
Sant Pere de Rodes is an old restored Benedictine monastery, one of the most renowned in Catalonia given its architectural relevance and privileged location, as it offers views of the whole of the Cape of Creus and the Gulf of León. From the monastery there is a small path that leads up to the chapel of Sant Salvador. The walk is quite feasible and if you are lucky enough to walk up on a clear day, you will be able to contemplate an astonishing view of the whole of the Alto Ampurdán.

The Port de la Selva can easily be reached by car down the forest track that starts off from the actual monastery. It is a seafaring location that is well worth the visit, and book lovers will be able to visit the "Hostal de la Marina", which the famous theatre play was based on.

It is easy to get from El Port de la Selva to Cadaqués by the coast road passing by Llançà. The municipality of Cadaqués, presided by its magnificent parish church, is very beautiful and offers a spectacular landscape. It became an international centre of artistic avant-garde thanks to the periods Picasso, Buñuel, Paul Eluard and, most importantly, Salvador Dalí spent here. The cemetery boasts sculptures by Josep Llimona.
