RUTA 3: Perelada - Vilabertran

Peralada
Barely twenty minutes from Sant Pere Pescador, tourists can visit Perelada and the Castle that has given it fame. It is well worth strolling around the village's urban complex for a while to contemplate its invaluable monumental heritage. The grand Catalan chronicler Ramon Muntaner is thought to have been born in the Main Square in 1265.
The Castle became a Residential Palace (16th C.) when Francesc Jofre de Rocabertí received the title of Count of Perelada from Felipe III. The whole castle is surrounded by exuberant and luxuriant gardens with a magnificent swan lake where the prestigious international music festival is held in the summer. The castle are has currently been turned into a Casino. Not to be missed.
The municipality of Vilabertran is very near Perelada. The former was the scene for the wedding between Jaume II and Blanca d'Anjou (1295) in Santa Maria de Vilabertran, an ancient but very beautiful monastery and one of the jewels of Catalonian Romanesque art. Some of the main elements are the unfinished gothic portal, the funerary chapel, the magnificent Abbatial palace and the fortresses.
